The Senior Management Team of the University of Hong Kong has sent a message titled "Civility to all members of the University" to the Chairperson of HKU Students' Union's Campus TV today (September 2) regarding a video shown in the television channel. Details are as below:
"We are distressed that a video recently circulated by the HKU Students’ Union’s Campus TV contains bullying and hate speech. The University condemns this video and the views it expresses about specific members of the student body.
The University values freedom of thought and expression, but these must remain within the basic tenets of civility and be true to our accepted values of inclusion and respect. The video's depictions of a specific group of the University’s students were particularly offensive, hurtful, insensitive and unfair. These depictions discriminate against these students solely because of their place of origin, something that would be condemned anywhere in the world. They do not represent the views of the majority of the HKU community.
The production and dissemination of malicious views or attacks on members of the University will not be tolerated. This video should be removed from all platforms. The producer of the video also owes an apology to all members of the HKU community. Hatred, bullying and bigotry cannot be disguised as freedom of speech and therefore have no place in HKU.
Our students, wherever they are from, have come to HKU to learn and to make a positive contribution to humanity. They deserve our support and we believe that the HKU Students’ Union should always be serving the best interests of all students.
HKU is an international University that embraces, and continues to embrace, the core values of the civilised world (https://www.hku.hk/f/upload/19914/Civility-on-Campus.pdf). We expect all members of the University to stay vigilant and uphold these values at all times.
