How often do you get lost in a city even when using GPS? Have you ever called a taxi using a taxi app but the taxi could not find your correct location? How about getting lost in a shopping mall trying to find a shop but not even knowing your current location? The reason is because GPS or other indoor navigation using WiFi have positioning errors.
Chair Professor in GIS in Urban Planning Professor Anthony Yeh and his research team offers a novel solution to this problem with the invention of the Smart Address Plate (SAP) which when installed in buildings or shops, can help users determine their location and find outdoor and indoor destinations easily via one mobile application.
The research team believes that in the construction of a smart city, having a Smart Address System that is internationally applicable, convenient and accurate in positioning is the most fundamental infrastructure. The smart system will not only allow deliverymen, firefighters and ambulance assistants to find locations faster and more accurately, saving time and lives, but also incorporate other smart functions such as opening the door, switching on lighting, looking for parking space or performing payment automatically via a command after arriving at a destination. It could also inform and guide you to the latest boarding gate or train platform that has just been changed. In the long run, the Smart Address System in conjunction with navigation programmes and commands, could prepare for future Smart City facilities such as driverless cars, transport and robots etc.
Professor Yeh and his team will introduce the invention in a press conference, with details as follows:
